Abstract

This study identified the theme of teaching vocabulary in scientific journals indexed in the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (Virtual Health Library). Twenty-five records were retrieved and addressed, in theoretical or empirical evidence, the relation between vocabulary and reading and focused on the child-juvenile population. The articles were classified into three categories: Description of the processes involved in reading and / or writing, Evaluation of the effectiveness of interventions and Validation of the tools. Of 38 standardized instruments mentioned, 15 assessed vocabulary and four reports provide guidelines for effective procedures for teaching vocabulary. The new bibliometric approach was established as an important resource for the identification of methodological studies that characterize the topic of vocabulary teaching, assisting in the development of future intervention research.
