Knowledge of pediatricians of the Valley of Itajaí about stuttering and disfluency of development

Objective: to characterize the pediatricians knowledge of the valley of Itajaí about childhood stuttering and disfluency of development. Methods: We submitted a questionnaire with closed questions for 35 pediatricians distributed of the Valley of Itajai. The data were stored in a structured information retrieval through an Excel spreadsheet version 7 and analyzed by simple frequency distribution. Results: As for the variable definition, 57.14% of pediatricians defined the disfluency of development as a stage of language acquisition to be overcome and 82.86% define stuttering as en involuntary break in the flow of speech. In the characterization, the union of observable and unobservable factors prevailed; as for the etiology, 71.43% pointed out the multiple causes of stuttering and 74,28% pointed the disfluency as a natural phase of development; 45,71% believe there is prevention for stuttering, for the disfluency, 40% believe there isn’t prevention; 40% indicate the speech therapy for the stuttering and 60%, for the disfluency; 57,14% have the conduct of orientation for parents and the referral to the speech therapy. The responses were consistent with issues raised by the literature, as well as reflected their practices with patients with disfluency. Of the population, 77.14% recognized the difference between the chances investigated. Conclusion: The knowledge of the pediatricians of the valley of Itajaí about the subject matter is a fusion of the theoretical and empyrean knowledge. The pediatricians believe that working together, the pediatrician and the speech therapist is effective when diagnosis is early.Downloads
