Compreensão de textos escritos: um estudo com adolescentes surdos

Background: Deafness and Reading. Aim: this study had the purpose to investigate reading comprehension of the Portuguese by deaf teenagers. Method: This study counted upon, as participants, thirty-two deaf teenagers, all fluent users of Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) and enrolled in Middle School who were required to read two texts: the first one related to a short novel and the second concerning with journalistic news. The global contents comprehension was analyzed through ‘titles’ (in Portuguese) applied by the above mentioned participants, and the understanding about each text mean ideas, through their reproductions in LIBRAS. Results: Most of the students have showed difficulties in identifying the global meaning and principal ideas of the texts.
