Abstract

This article is based on the Master degree essay “The work performed at the PITU (Pediatric Intensive Therapy Unity) with preterm infants and their mothers: contributions to the clinical – speech therapy method “ (Pêgo, 2005). Its purpose is to present the theoretical and practical approaches which have supported the speech therapy assistance on the preterm newborn during its internment at the PITU until its discharge concerning mainly the issues involving the needs to support the mother so that she can take care of her baby. It reinforces the need of the speech therapy in the newborn staff. This is necessary for the understanding and the treatment of the feeding difficulties of the preterm infant and its high risk condition for problems in its development and in the constitution of the mother/baby bond. The theoreticalmethodological bases of this study originated from the joint established among the foundations of the Neuroscience, the winnicottian Psychoanalysis, Neurodevelopment Treatment- “Bobath Approach” and Synactive Theory. All of them are very important for the understanding of the speech therapist work with the infant born at risk. The importance of the mother as the first environment of a baby was also reinforced due to her importance in the baby’s constitution as a “person”. It can be concluded that this type of speech therapy work demands that the professional must be connected with the baby, the mother and also the members of the hospital staff. In this perspective, it is possible to receive the mother-baby couple, to humanize the UTIP environment and provide the small patients with tools that allow them to conquer the acquisitions of this period of life.
