Abstract

Background: story telling in the therapeutic process of hearing-impaired children. Aim: Describe and discuss the interaction of mother and hearing impaired children during story telling with a book. Method: Two pairs of mother and child were videotaped during story telling situation. Results: Each mother demonstrated different styles when telling stories. The findings suggested that mothers of hearingimpaired children look more frequently at their children to confirm the understanding. They tend to repeat words and expressions, anticipating possible misunderstandings. Very often, they underestimated the child’s interlocutory capabilities. Conclusion: Systematic observation of story telling situation has important implications in the therapeutic process.
