Abstract

Aims: to establish the accomplishment of a group of parents who attended the Course for the Parents of Hearing Impaired Children, and to study the correlation between their background and their knowledge about hearing loss. Method: a critical analysis of one of the five sequential modules of the Course for parents, organized in four different cities was carried out , by studying the questionnaire on the knowledge of the themes approached, applied to those participating in the Course, before and after the presentation of the modules. One hundred and forty-four parents of hearing impaired children aged 0-5 yrs, participated in this study. Issues approached: the affective, motor and cognitive development of a child in the age range 0-5 years [AMCD]; Hearing Abilities [HA]; Familial Aspects [FA]; Auditory Brainstem Response [ABR]; Otoacoustic Emissions [OAE] and basic Concepts on Cochlear Implant [CI]. Results: There was a statistically significant difference when comparing the mean percentage of hit in the initial and final questionnaires for three cities studied, and analyzed all grouped cities. The issues in which the participants presented greater difficulty were: OAE, CI and ABR, followed by issues HA, FA and e AMCD. A statistically significant difference was observed between the mean of hit on the initial and final questionnaire, for all themes, except for hearing ability. A positive correlation between the level of background and the accomplishment in the questionnaires was observed. Conclusion: it was possible to verify that parents may benefit from formational courses and that these must be organized taking into account the educational background of parents, so as to reach greater accomplishment levels.
