Abstract

This article intends to analyze the ways in which the movie Também Somos Irmãos (José Carlos Burle, 1949) have introduced its characters and their ethnic, racial identities. We also explore how the discourse about race, which was socially valid at that time, has been reappropriated in the discussion proposed by the movie. Briefly, we can describe the plot of the movie: two Afro-Brazilian brothers were raised by a racist stepfather and they chose different paths melodramatically opposed. While Renato chose a juridical career, Miro preferred marginality as a way of contestation of “white values”.
