THE SAD TROPICS: METROPOLE AND PERIPHERY IN LÉVI-STRAUSS’ COURSE THROUGH CUIABÁ TOWN, BRAZIL

This article analyzes one chapter of the travel report Sad Tropics, written by Claude Lévi-Strauss, as a result of his course by Mato Grosso, notably its capital Cuiabá. For this analysis, it is operationalized the dichotomy between the metropole and the periphery in the construction of scientific knowledge, as proposed by Connell (2013a, 2013b). It is concluded that the chapter seems to constitute itself as the reproduction and maintenance of the Eurocentric scientific tradition, which intends to be value-free and non-historical, but it is characterized as excluding and maintainer of privileges produced as the effect of the scientific process.Downloads
