Abstract

Belonging to the Game Localization field, having the game GTA V (2013) as its object, this work analyzes descriptively two localizations to Brazilian Portuguese, the one dubbed by fans and the one subtitled, having its oral dialogue in English as a source text, in order to investigate some translation choices that may reflect either domestication/transcreation or foreignization strategies. The theoretical framework, based on Halliday’s Social Semiotics, makes use of agnation and multimodality notions. The results reveal that the localization made by fans makes more use of semantically and culturally agnate retextualizations and choices influenced by visual resources, which contribute to the strategy of domestication.
