The objective of this paper is to present an analysis of the structure of 40 English Language items at the National High School Exam (ENEM) using Critical Genre Analysis’ (CGA) theoretical and methodological assumptions (MEURER, 2002; 2004; 2005; BHATIA, 2004; MOTTA-ROTH, 2005; 2008). The analysis dealt with the item’s reference texts, questions and response alternatives. The results point that most items explore the reading of news, ads, and song lyrics. The questions firstly present a contextualization, and, then, together with the response alternatives, present a command.
