Additive functional multidimensional analysis of the Ted Talks register

Résumé

This study investigates the linguistic configuration of TED Talks through an additive functional multidimensional analysis based on the concept of register (Biber, 1988). The study utilizes the CoTED corpus (Oliveira, 2021), comprising 3,411 transcripts produced between 1984 and 2019. In this analysis, the five dimensions of English variation described by Biber (1988) allow for the identification of lexico-grammatical patterns. The linguistic profile of TED Talks register shows involved production for Dimension 1, non-narrative focus for Dimension 2, situation-dependent reference for Dimension 3, reduced overt expression of persuasion for Dimension 4, and orientation toward abstract information for Dimension 5.

Master's degree in Applied Linguistics and Language Studies (MA) from the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo (PUC-SP / 2021 / CAPES scholarship). Bachelor's degree in English and Portuguese Languages and Literatures and College degree in English Language Teaching (EFL) by University of São Paulo (USP - 2007). Specialized in Translation of English by Estácio de Sá (Lato sensu - 2018). Experience as a Professor of Higher Education at Fatec(s), teaching English or Portuguese in courses such as Systems Analysis and Development, International Trade, Airport Logistics, Welding, Commercial Management, Events and Extension courses.
