Abstract

The objective was to compare the characteristics of social support networks for men and women as the network size, frequency of contacts and functions performed by the family. This is a prospective study of 243 elderly character sociometric with the University of the Third Age University. We used the Map Minimum Relations Aging. There were similar between sexes in mean quadrant of the family, total records in most functions, except in aid to domestic activities, levels of social support. The size of the social network was similar networks in small, medium and large. Quadrant family, in almost all functions were very similar. For this population, both have aspects of social support network similar, showing no significant differences.
