This review, in Pepsic, Lilacs and SciELO databases, analyzes the relationship between aging, self-care, and memory; presents self-care research in Brazil and the workers who work with this concept. The elderly report difficulty in storing and retrieving information, which interferes with self-care. This requires active and responsible participation, influences autonomy, independence, and favors the integration of the elderly into the family and community. Intervention is effective and beneficial in developing self-care in the elderly.
