Abstract

The challenges that metropolitan agglomerations face are not limited to an attempt to obtain a position in the ranking of global cities. Most of the metropolitan areas of Europe, Latin America and North America search for an institutional framework to address these challenges, taking into account that the autonomies inherited from the administrative and fiscal decentralization usually interfere in such purposes. This work examines critically these three experiences in light of metropolitics, that is, an institutional framework that facilitates inter-jurisdictional coordination of policies to tackle the problems and propose new alternatives for metropolitan development.
