Abstract

This article discusses the tenements located downtown Santos. The object of analysis is the precarious rented houses and the goal is to make a historical record of their settlement process until today. The first part places the importance of the central areas, their physical deterioration and recent discussions involving their revitalization. The second section focuses on relevant aspects of the tenements as the oldest housing modality of Santos’ working class, placing them in a historical context. The third part presents a socio-economic overview of this type of housing and its precariousness. The fourth part deals with the laws and the projects developed by public authorities in the area. Finally, concluding remarks are an evaluation of those actions highlighting the progress achieved and the problems to be faced.
