Abstract

Regional metropolization became hegemonic at the turn of the century, associated with financial globalization. In the Brazilian territory, this implosion-explosion of the metropolis announced its initial steps with the creation of the first metropolitan regions and the launch of metropolitan real estate forms, like gated communities. In the mid-1990s, with Brazil’s incorporation into neoliberalism, metropolitan regionalization as a means and product of capital became more and more concrete. In the 21st century, regional metropolization gained intensity and complexity in Brazil, substantiating the strategies of capital. In this perspective, the aim of this study is to understand regional metropolization as a central process of the new capital regionalization, which is metropolitan regionalization, based on the Brazilian case.
