Os desafios dos jovens maias de Ixcán na Guatemala de hoje

Abstract

This essay presents the social conditions experienced by Mayan youngsters from the municipality of Ixcan, Guatemala. The diversity of young expressions is the conjunction of divers socio-historic livings from the present and the past. The process of Spanish colonization subjugated the Mayan people, giving them a position of inferiority in the constitution of the society, obliging them to assume a different way of life. The exploitation of the workforce strengthened the economy and left the people in a condition of poverty. The thirty six years of civil war usurped the dream of the Mayans who migrated to Ixcan in the search of land. Today, the adults who experienced the conflict carry traumas that are visible in the conflicting social relationships. The marks of the war are present in the youth mind. The media delineate new interconnections in the different youth outlook.
