Abstract

Several forms of African-Brazilian religions arose from the culturalexchanges among African slaves and former-slaves shipped toBrazil, Europeans, and native peoples of the land. These religionsare, among others, "candomblé", "batuque", "tambor de mina", and"xangô". The African-Brazilian religion chosen for this study iscandomblé, more specifically the São Paulo-based varieties, in anattempt to characterize everyday life for this religion in the world'sthird largest city. The choice was due to the relationship establishedbetween a traditional community like candomblé and the "fast" wayof life of a postmodern metropolis by photography, a bridge betweenthe traditions of this religion and the modernity of São Paulo.
