Background Factors of the Use of Operational Research as a Strategic Tool in Organizations

The objective of this article is to identify the influence of the background factors of the use of Operations Research (OR) as a strategic tool in organizations. For both dependent variables were proposed in relation to its use: Benefits expectations; frequency of use; and user training. The empirical phase analyzed responses from key executives of 171 companies. Data analysis was performed by Exploratory Factor Analysis and the Structural Equation Modeling with the estimation by means of partial least squares. As a result, it was found that the operational research is still used incipient in business, and that although executives recognize the potential benefits of using Operations Research (OR) as a strategic tool, the lack of training of users and the low frequency of use this tool still show as limiting factors for its use.
