From the serpent to Jesus, from the tree to the cross

This article addresses the theme of biblical intertextuality that goes beyond direct quotation, widely known in exegetical circles as “verbal concordance” between different texts. The objective of this research is to discover the path taken by sacred authors to arrive at the Christian reinterpretation that relates the bronze serpent to Christ on the cross. To this end, the method of exegesis of sacred texts is used, considering vocabulary and narrative patterns. To develop the theme, the following steps are taken: First, John 3:14-15 is reinterpreted to highlight the vocabulary used; then, the text of Numbers 21:4-9 is analyzed and compared with John's reinterpretation; then, the semantic field of the message conveyed is analyzed, seeking the different meanings attached to these terms in the Old Testament; next, other New Testament re-readings of this text are considered. With this approach, it is concluded that the Johannine re-reading is the result of a long process of re-readings within Scripture.
