Abstract

The current denominated Prosperity Theology (TP) originated in North American soil in the nineteenth century, being expanded to Brazil from the 1970s onwards, with Bishop Edir Macedo, founder of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (IURD) in 1977. The central point of TP comprises the commercialization of the Christian faith, distorting the teachings present in the Holy Bible. It is a garment that introduced poverty and disease into the list of curses that could affect the lives of those who do not bother to accumulate wealth on earth; Disseminated in the media with overwhelming intensity. This article aims to identify the factors that contributed to the worldwide diffusion of PT. It is divided into three sections. The first section corresponds to the emergence of TP in a global context, emphasizing the Brazilian particularity. The second part deals with the misrepresentations brought about by this theology. And the third will bring to light the implications of the TP for the delegitimation of Christianity.
