Abstract

This paper is part of a great purpose to pay homage to Antônio Flávio Pierucci (1945-2012) and presents as its main objective, among so many possible directions in dialogue with the living author’s work, a discussion on fundamentalism as privileged category for the comprehension of history, since the second half of 19th century, especially in the West. Searching for the historical and semantic accuracy, the original fundamentalist movement is presented as byproduct of a disenchanted and secularized modernity, according to Weber’s theoretical legacy examined by Pierucci along his theoretical work (also a legacy). In the title of a paper for the general public, Pierucci states: “Creationism is fundamentalism” (in order to agree with one of Pierucci’s favorite authors, Macaco Simão: “clearer,it’s impossible!”).
