Abstract

In relation to Buddhism, Max Weber explains that, despite not having a definite importance in India today, its great success in ancient India, rooted in its development - now much expanded - in China, Tibet, Korea, Japan etc., qualifies it as a universal religion: it is one of the greatest missionary religions of the earth. According to Weber, Buddhism does not bind itself to a mere speculative knowledge, but to a state of peace and tranquility that is achieved by renouncing the world by means of self-realization; what is sought is not release towards eternal life, but a tranquility for death.
