Religious Education in Brazil: the constitution of a disputed field

Abstract

Formed from the deep cultural and educational heritage in the country, Christian religion, particularly Catholicism, sought to guarantee their presence in public space. Under this condition, Religious Education was designed as teaching of doctrines and catechesis within the public school, generating competition in the political field by the defense or denial of this component in public school in tension with the secular State.  At the same time, it generates a dispute in the religious field in completion with different denominations which strive to conquer this field. The present article offers a bibliographical overview of the disputes around Religious Education in Brazil analyzed in accordance Bourdieu’s concept of field as a locus of socio-political struggles.
