Testimonies on the prominent position of the Almeida Bible as a literary and religious heritage of the Portuguese language are many and relevant. However, despite the substantial number of studies on the history of the first translation of the Bible into Portuguese, there is still a great deal of doubt regarding its textual sources, especially whether or not the translator followed the original biblical languages. As an initial and necessary step to solve this problem, the most important conclusions on the subject were systematically tracked; and, as far as possible, we also seek to provide the materials from which these conclusions were drawn. Finally, a synthesis of the status quaestionis was made, considered as an indispensable starting point to obtain in the future a more satisfactory solution to this impasse.
