Material Religion studies religion through its material aspects such as food and foodways, clothing, architecture, images, postures, etc. everything that is not discursive. Dealing with body and objects, it breaks with Eurocentric methodologies about religion based on texts only. Little explored in the Brazilian academia, it arouses many doubts, since it is not only a matter of mentioning and describing the usage of objects and body practices in religions, neither means to analyze its symbolisms, but rather, it is a matter of reviewing categories like body, things, fetishism, idolatry, animism, concepts used along history to diminish religiosities in the colonial contexts. This paper aims to clarify what Material Religion is and to show how to give voice to nonwestern epistemologies.
