Abstract

According to the ethics and principles of Hippocrates, physicians may not enter in the field of religion. However, patients do need support concerning questions related to their faith. Late modernity and overrating of individuality make more difficult for our society to be unified by a number of cohesive symbols (as in the past). The emotional transference from the patient to the physician as a sacerdotal and patriarchal figure causes the patients to diminish the belief in other professions efficacy in healthcare. In spite of this, a number of psychiatric patients has the capacity to reflect about relationships and contradictions between their delusional beliefs (or psychotic nuclei) and their religious faith. As an answer for these questions, we propose the insertion of the religious studies teacher at the Centros de Atenção Psicossocial (CAPS), which are the public mental heathcare centers in Brazil. We propose the insertion of educational professionals in a function distinctive of Técnicos de Referência (personal care givers), giving only group classes. This way, they will use their knowledge acquired in their graduation to improve certain capabilities of patients and caregivers, leading to greater resilience in coping with mental health conditions.
