The problematization of evangelicals and “Bolsonarism” in French scientific literature

Abstract

With the aim of examining the relationship between religion and politics in Brazil in the context of Jair Bolsonaro's government (2019-2022), this article provides an overview of French scientific production on the subject in order to highlight the key approaches and arguments of this academic problematization of the issue “evangelicals and Bolsonarism”. Inscribed in Information and Communication Sciences, the study outlines a disciplinary and thematic cartography of the subject, analyses the main postulates of the scientific problematization and, finally, proposes a programmatic analysis of the relationship between religion and political parties. While the cartography produced sets up an interdisciplinary field of articles on the subject, the proposed programmatic perspective, based on political science, allows us to question an essential problem of this field of study: the definition of the relationship that links, articulates, separates or hierarchises the religious and the political. This study thus aims to contribute to reflection on the uses of the secular and the religious in the political field by means of an analysis focused on the issues of “sacralisation of the religious” and the “secularisation of the religious”, adapted to Brazilian case study.
