Autonomy has defined the university since its origins. In the modern context it became a political issue, expressing the separation of church and state with their educational institutions. Since then, the confessional label has been seen as synonymous with control over teaching and research freedoms. However, it is an issue that remains affirmed by the Church as a fundamental value and, in many cases, fulfils the function of resistance to dictatorial political controls. Revisiting the theme of autonomy in the origins of universities helps us to understand their paradoxical course throughout history within the Catholic Church.
