The Sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aberta is located in Gerês Park in the Minho region of Portugal. This article explores the religious experience through the lens of materiality, specifically examining the relationship between religion and the immanence of objects within the Sanctuary of São Bento da Porta Aberta. We hypothesize that religious experiences at the Sanctuary are primarily shaped by the interplay of space, people, and objects, all connected through shared affections. In this study, materialities are understood as objects that embody the devotion of individuals to the Saint, transcending mere religious symbolism. The research methodology was exploratory and mixed, combining theoretical frameworks with ethnography, including participant observation. We conclude that the materiality of religion at the São Bento da Porta Aberta Sanctuary is manifested in the emotional connection to the image of São Bento, the numerous ex-votos brought to the Sanctuary, the offerings, the diverse gifts, and, notably, the carnation flowers presented with simplicity and heartfelt affection.
