Abstract

In this paper we reflect on how Leonardo Coimbra (1883-1936) defended the freedom of religious education in the First Portuguese Republic (1910-1926), when he was Minister for Education in the 31st Government of the Republic, headed by António Maria da Silva. We leave the exploration of Leonardo Coimbra’s bio-bibliographical aspects, to context some issues about the freedom of religion and the freedom of religious education in this period, by extending some conclusions for the actual debate about this subject.
