Bertolaso Stella on the border between theology and study of religion: an exercise of religiography in the prehistory of an area

The article presents a historiographical research based on sources of the prehistory of the Study of Religion in Brazil, in a religiographic effort to understand a time when the boundaries between Theology and Study of Religion were still very uncertain. The research recovers primary documentary sources (scholarly articles and self-funded publications), written testimonies of deceased or retired researchers, and a brief record of oral history regarding the efforts of Presbyterian pastor Jorge Bertolaso Stella, who from 1930 to 1970 focused on study of various topics that were not part of the agenda of Brazilian researchers of the universities of the time.
