Sustainable Innovation, Natural Trajectory, Technological Trajectory

Abstract

The natural trajectory identifies the direction taken by technological innovation that is influenced by different factors. In the case of sustainable innovation, there are no studies that analyze this dimension in the Brazilian context and, therefore, this study seeks to identify the natural trajectories of this type of innovation based on the patent base of the National Institute of Industrial Property. Data between 2012 and 2017 were analyzed that considered the relationship between patents, gross domestic product, regulation, public policies, educational system, market, technological paradigms and catching-up. It was identified that even in innovations characterized as specific products and that, therefore, tend to exhibit different technological trajectories, the innovations registered as patents in Brazil, have similar natural trajectories, that is, they demonstrate the use of the same set of practices, knowledge and experiences to be produced. In this sense, the study opens possibilities to relate the technological trajectories of patents granted in the country with incrementalism or radicalism in the nature of the innovations that resulted in the analyzed products or processes.
