Abstract

This paper analyses the structure and performance of Brazilian pulp industry from 1980 to 2005, considering its participation in international market. Secondary dataset concerning to production, export, production cost and Brazil’s main competitor’s production and costs are organized in tables and graphs in order to accomplish our analysis, what is also based on structure-conduct-performance paradigm. The main findings are: (1) market concentration, evaluated by CR4 and HHI indexes, has increased despite their oscillation; (2) Brazil has increased its market share in the worldwide market of pulp due to its comparative advantages (based on natural resource availability and labor cost) and technological innovations that took place in both forest and industrial areas.
