Abstract

Between 2001 and 2010, formal employment grew 67% in Espírito Santo. In this way, the purpose of this paper is to analyze which municipalities and sectors have contributed more to this growth by using shift-share method. The results indicated a significant dispersion between the cities in the creation of employment, in accordance with their productive structures and specific factors that may or may not generate competitive advantages. Finally, considering the Metropolitan Region of Vitória, the results show that employment grew by a lower rate in the capital compared to almost all nearby towns, due to agglomeration diseconomies in Vitória.
