Abstract

This article deals with the relationship between gender inequality and the level of economic growth. Its main objective is to test the hypothesis that the lower the gender inequality, the higher the country's economic growth. Works such as those by Klasen and Lamanna (2009), Er (2012) and Lechman and Kaur (2015) deal with the subject using different approaches to assess gender inequality, such as women's access to education services and insertion into the labor market and the relationship between these variables and economic growth. In this article, the World Bank database was used for the period from 1960 to 2022, and the econometric technique adopted was panel data. The results show that the key variables for the analysis, the ratio of female participation in the labor market and the ratio of female schooling, have positive and statistically significant signs. Thus, the lower the gender inequality in education and access to the labor market, the greater the economic development. These results are in line with studies by Klasen and Lamanna (2009), Lincove (2008) and Thévenon et al (2012).
