Resumo

Metafísicos e físicos compartilham o desejo orgulhoso de entender o mundo e todas as coisas que existem. E assim compreender completamente a natureza da realidade. Quase cem anos depois de ter sido proposta, a teoria quântica transformou radicalmente a ciência da física, convidando a uma concepção de realidade que está drasticamente em desacordo com nossas convicções metafísicas mais arraigadas. Um cientista e metafísico extraordinário, Charles Sanders Peirce (1839–1914) estava singularmente preparado para reconhecer alguns dos “preconceitos metafísicos” sobre o mundo que a teoria quântica, desenvolvida anos depois, revelou. Este artigo propõe traçar como o realismo de Peirce, inspirado por John Duns Scotus (c. 1266–1308), monge franciscano do século XIII, adaptado para uma metafísica científica reconcebida, aproxima-se de alguns dos enigmas familiares colocados pela física quântica no início do século XXI.
