Abstract

This study explores a recent trend in cartography known as deep mapping. Deep mapping is an interdisciplinary approach whose objective is to mobilize alternative mapping techniques in order to reach a deeper understanding of places. This article proposes a bibliographic review of the subject. It presents an overview of relevant definitions and principal authors in the field. The paper suggests that deep mapping projects involve three methodological steps: walking, archeology and montage. Based on the analysis of examples, the paper discusses the process of mapping places in order to guide future investigations in deep mapping
