Abstract

This article has the objective to celebrate the 31st birthday of Ecosemiotics. In 1994 the word “ecosemiotics” was used for the first time by Winfried Nöth to designate “the study of the mutual relations between organisms and their environment”, in a paper that was written for a volume entitled Ensaios em Homenagem a / Essays in Honor of Thomas A. Sebeok, published as a special issue of Norma Tasca’s Portuguese semiotics journal Cruzeiro Semiótico (Nöth, 1995), which came out only a year later. The article was written in Portuguese so that the word ecossemiótica antecedes its English counterpart, which is now part of Timo Maran’s chair title at the University of Tartu. The aim of this paper is to discuss the concept of ecosemiotics and its relevance in the context of climate change.
