Digital culture, precariousness, and the Anthropocene

The article explores the precariousness of communication and technological ruin in the Anthropocene era. The relationship between the materialities of digital culture and the global environmental crisis reveals the complexity and interconnectedness of the contemporary world through errors, failures, and disruptions. It addresses a communication problem: the inability to speak well while respecting the felicity conditions of specific modes of existence. We fail in this speaking, trafficking truths from one mode to another, exacerbating the crisis and limiting the recognition of possibilities for world-building. The argument is made that the Anthropocene crisis results from technical progress and the anthropocentric view that positions humans as the sole legitimate agents of transformation. Since the Industrial Revolution, the invisibility of technical devices, due to their functionality, has neutralized anomalies, contributing to the climate crisis. It is crucial to bring these problems to the surface, acknowledge the plurality of beings, and recognize the entanglements we are immersed in without resorting to essentialisms or oversimplified narratives. Failing to speak well is a symptom of an inherent communication incapable of recognizing the plurality of beings and their modes of existence. In the ever-precarious communication condition, speaking well may offer a pathway to avoid planetary ruin in the Anthropocene.
