THE RHETORICAL TRIAD IN A SPEECH BY FEDERAL REPRESENTATIVE ERIKA HILTON

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the rhetorical strategies used in a speech by federal deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP), known in politics for being an activist for the rights of minority groups, especially the LGBTQIAPN+ community. This paper focuses on identifying and understanding rhetorical strategies based on the Aristotelian triad ethos, pathos, and logos. Rhetoric is understood as a faculty capable of
observing what each speech contains as an element that aims to persuade a given audience. We support our research in some authors such as Abreu (2009), Aristóteles (2011), Ferreira (2010), Mateus (2018), Meyer (2007), Reboul (2004), Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca (2014), among others. The corpus consists of a speech that was divided into two rhetorical acts. The speech was taken from the UOL
channel on the YouTube platform. In her argument, the parliamentarian uses rhetorical strategies to show her indignation against the approval of Bill 580/2007, reported by Congressman Pastor Eurico (PL-PE), which aims to prohibit same-sex marriage. The results obtained indicate that the speaker projects an ethos of a whistleblower, aims to arouse the passion of indignation in the audience and
proclaims the argument of incompatibility in order to refute the opposing thesis. It is through the rhetorical triad that the congresswoman organizes her project of persuasion, emphasizing, in a more incisive way, an emotional appeal.
