Abstract This text reflects on how the mathematics teaching used in the book “Método Lusitânico de Desenhar as Fortificações das Praças Regulares e Irregulares”, by Pimentel (1680), which implies a “rationalist” pedagogy and introduces the mathematics used in the artisan’s practice with greater “scientific rigor” in the learning of “military Architecture”, works with knowledge, technology and representation to make a regular, calculated and visible space. All this in order to reflect on the formation of a way of knowing, looking and representing that is on the basis of mathematics education; also, in order to view the history of mathematics by means of the problematizations of a society, of a culture, enabling the development and discussion of this history to and in the current teaching of mathematics. Keywords: Representation; History of Mathematics; History in Mathematics Education.
