This article investigates the relationship between the theory of evolution and the political culture of German social democracy (SPD) at the end of the 19th century. Starting from a commentary on the party's political and cultural activities - particularly the May Day celebrations of 1897- it seeks to unfold certain testimonies that attest to this connection, in order to reflect on the meaning of the articulation between socialism and evolutionism, as well as on the application of the idea of evolution/development (Entwicklung) in the formulation of political and theoretical concepts. Finally, it presents evidence suggesting that, despite a prevailing belief, this relationship, central in the 19th century, loses strength at the turn of the 20th century.
