The covid-19 pandemic and its restrictions caused several changes in social relations and their exchanges, causing a massive migration to social networks. Through this form of connection, it was possible to maintain ties, but it brought greater visibility to social dysfunctions, such as hate speech, the object of this investigation. Based on data from the NGO Safernet, we will discuss the dissemination of this phenomenon in Brazilian social networks during the pandemic, considering a possible underreporting generated by the digital structure itself. Observing the visibility brought by the networks and the surveillance society and starting from a retrospective look at the colonial and racist Brazilian society, the modernity of the phenomenon is problematized. In concluding notes, we assume that this is not a legitimately modern issue, but simply more transparent due to social networks.
