Abstract – Between the 50s and 60s of the 20th century, Brazilian cinematography, from the city of Rio de Janeiro, mass and systematically produced the chanchada, based on humor and also on the appeal to the simple man – worker or unemployed. These films, marked by the influence of North American cinema, managed to create their own language with a narrative that revealed Brazilian society at the time and pointed to social transformations towards an urban-industrial world. In general, chanchada films constitute an actor's cinema, as most of them were centered on the charisma of clown artists such as Dercy Gonçalves, Grande Otelo, Oscarito and Zé Trindade.
