Abstract

In this paper I examine trial and error as an explanatory slogan for scientific knowledge, focusing especially on the hypothetical-deductive method. The trial and error slogan is too vague and implausible as an explanation of scientific knowledge. In this connection, I call into question the inattention to the relevance of the context of discovery for epistemology.
