The purpose of this article is to address some considerations concerning the relationship between the cognoscibility of God and the ontological dimension of the symbol within the religious metaphysics of the American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce. To accomplish this task, this article is divided in two parts. In the first part, efforts will be made to map the development of the ontological concept of symbol in the author’s writings during his youth and adulthood. In the second part, it will seek to show how the concept of symbol, in its ontological dimension, relates to the author’s position, displayed throughout his career, concerning how we can think, philosophically, about God.
