John Dewey and socialism
a study on conferences in China (1919-1920)

This article presents a study of the conferences given by John Dewey (1859- 1952), at Peking University, in 1919. The research interest is in a lecture, in the collection of conferences, whose theme was about socialism. Therefore, we seek to analyze the interpretations elaborated by Dewey regarding socialism, his social and political recommendations for China in that revolutionary period and, mainly, his appropriations and considerations concerning the thought of Karl Marx (1819-1883). The influence of Dewey’s ideas in China, his learnings in that country and the impact of his thought on the revolutionary movement will also be addressed in this investigation.
