Resumptive relative clauses in the literate variety of the city of Rio de Janeiro in fifty years (1973-2023)

This article presents the results of an analysis about the variation in relativization strategies in literate variety of Portuguese of the city of Rio de Janeiro, specifically focusing on resumptive relative clauses, in which a personal pronoun fills the relativization position by recovering the reference of the relative clause antecedent. The database for the variationist analysis was collected from three informal speech samples of native residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro with a higher level of literacy, collected in the early 1970s, the late 1990s and the year 2023, thus constituting what Labov called a short-term study of real-time change. The quantitative results confirmed that the resumptive strategy is a marginal relativization strategy in the speech of high literate Brazilians, with a very low frequency of use and strongly conditioned by structural factors. In addition, the results indicated (although with a smaller statistical certainty margin) a change towards an increase in the use of this relativization strategy in the observed period, with women leading this process of change.
