Within the framework of Systemic-Functional Linguistics, this study aims to analyze the mediation of meanings in the translation of taboo language in subtitling, illustrating how strategies of omission or maintenance affected this process. This empirical study is based on a bidirectional, quantitative, and qualitative analysis of an audiovisual corpus, subtitled into Portuguese and broadcast on Portuguese free-to-air television in the 21st century, to show which variables influence the negotiation of these meanings at a communicative, pragmatic, and semiotic level.
